Educational Apps for Literacy

Are you looking for some educational apps for literacy? If so, we have a few apps that are perfect for classroom teachers, homeschoolers, parents, or tutors!

Educational Apps for Literacy from This Reading Mama

Are you having trouble with the sound? Try these helpful tips!

One of my favorite things about our literacy apps is that they are designed to fit your learner’s level of literacy understanding, which is important if kids are going to grow in their reading, writing, and spelling abilities. We want our kids practicing the phonics and spelling skills they need in engaging ways so they can progress forward.

So far, we’ve created apps for sight words, letter formation, and word study! Read more about each literacy app below.

Alphabetic Spellers Sorting App

If you use the word study method with your preschooler or Kindergartner, you know how much paper it can consume! That’s what gets me SO excited about our Alphabetic Spellers Sorting App!

Included are sorts for beginning sounds, ending sounds, vowel sounds, beginning blend sounds, beginning digraph sounds, word families, CVC words, and longer short vowel words {with blends & digraphs}. You know that this equals an entire year’s worth of sorting activities for young learners!

This app is multi-user and has the ability for you to track what your learners do AND the ability to custom assign and custom build sorts for each of your learners. That’s awesome!! Read more and see our Beginning Spelling App in action!

If you’d like to use paper resources to go with our app, you may want to also grab our Alphabet Spellers Printable Pack. This pack has all the sorts from the app in it so you can make your word study instruction more robust for your young learners.

Sight Word Games App

Equally important to learning phonics and the rules that apply to the English language is learning certain words by sight. These words {also known as “high frequency words”} happen so often in the English language that we want learners to know them automatically, by sight. This is the reason we have added a Sight Word App to our list of learning apps!

Sight Word Games App is designed with your K-3 learner in mind! Not only will kids be reading sight words, they will be will building, spelling, writing, whacking, and slinging them! My absolute favorite thing about this app that sets it apart from other sight word apps is that you can choose the sight word lists for each learner you have {and there’s no limit on players}!

Read more about and see each activity in the learn and games section of the app in my post about Sight Word Games App!

Letter Formation Apps

Handwriting proficiency is important for our young writers. How frustrating it would be to have a message to write, but the very thought of writing the letters deters you! This is very true for many of our young writers. These apps can help!

Our Letter Trace App is perfect for beginning or struggling writers! It provides practice with stroke patterns, organizes both uppercase and lowercase letters by group to make them easier to remember, and gives learners practice with those pesky letter reversals for b, d, p, and q.

The Trace it, Try it handwriting app was created for around kids ages 4+, although my 3.5 year old loves to play it, too! With this app, kids will learn the stroke patterns and get plenty of practice for 1- uppercase letters, 2- lowercase letters, 3- numbers 0-20, and basic CVC words. A free play practice section is included as well as mini-games, which add to the fun and learning.

Just like my Trace and Try alphabet pages and my Trace and Try number pages, this app guides kids to the correct letter and number formations.

Word Study Apps

Here are some educational apps for literacy that you can get excited about using! Based on the word study approach, these apps are developmentally appropriate and help kid build an understanding of spelling patterns.

Interested in reading more about the spelling? Then you might want to read my article, Using Words Their Way to Teach Spelling or my book, Teaching Kids to Spell {available via PDF or as a hard copy on Amazon. If you’re looking for more ways to make spelling a little more fun, I’d encourage you to get my ebook, Printable Spelling Activities and Games, with over 700 pages of spelling fun!
