Handwriting. It’s one of those things that’s not always so much fun for kids. Often, it’s accompanied by pages and pages of workbooks. These types of handwriting exercises can make our kids want to throw in the towel. And if we’re honest, we might, too! But we can’t ignore handwriting. It’s one of the important foundations for writing. If kids struggle with handwriting, it can become a distraction from writing the message.
That’s what makes the Trace It, Try It Handwriting App so exciting. Based on my free Trace it! Try it! pages for letters and numbers, this app gives kids lots of practice with handwriting using activities that are fun and engaging.

Trace It Try It Handwriting App
With this app, kids will learn the stroke patterns and get plenty of practice for
- uppercase letters,
- lowercase letters,
- numbers 0-20,
- and basic CVC words.
- A free play practice section is included as well as mini-games, which add to the fun and learning.
Learn Section
1. Uppercase and Lowercase Letters- Letters are grouped by similar stroke patterns and presented in a way that’s developmentally appropriate for young writers.
Users trace each letter twice with guidance, then try it on their own.
Kids drag an object that begins with the letter, like my Phonics Handwriting Pages, which builds awareness of letter sounds at the same time! Once three letters have been completed, kids can play a fun mini-game with stickers and painting that relate to the letters that were just practiced.
2. Numbers 0-20- Numbers are presented in order.
Users trace each number twice with guidance, then try it on their own.
After three numbers have been practiced, a fun memory match game is played which corresponds to the numbers that were just completed. This one is more challenging in that kids have to find three cards that match.
3. CVC Words- Users spell different short vowel words by tracing each letter of the word.
A colorful, CVC picture is displayed, while letter tiles help learners to see the spelling of the entire word.
Practice Section
Similar to the Montessori salt tray, the practice section has an uppercase or lowercase letter displayed. The child chooses the letter, watches the strokes of the letter,
and tries it on their own in the “sand”. This is a safe and fun place to practice what they have learned about handwriting. My kiddos LOVE this section, especially my {almost} 4 year old.
Play Section
Kids may “play” with the stickers they have earned from the Learn Section or play an Alphabet Memory Match Game.

This app looks amazing! Cant’ wait to download it but I need to make space on his tablet. I’ve been looking for something similar to help my special needs son with writing. Do you have any writing worksheets like this as well?
I meant tracing alphabet letters that have the numbers inside like the app. I love to make flashcards and laminate them, to allow him to write using a pencil as well.
Love it! I’ll have to see what I can do.
Thank you! 🙂
Becky,
This is amazing! I teach fourth grade, and have not even cracked open the handwriting books to teach cursive, although it’s in our standards. There’s just not enough time in the day! Did you make this app yourself? If so, do you have plans for a cursive one?
Thanks,
Brooke

I worked with an app developer to create the app. Right now, we don’t have plans for a cursive one, but that’s a great idea!!!
Hi I love the tracing app and downloaded the other Phonics Apps. There are some locked areas still. Is there going to be more added or did something go wrong when I downloaded them. Thanksss
The locked areas become unlocked when the child plays learning games and “earns” stars. Hope that helps.
When will this app be available on play store.
Hi Sandri, it was on Google Play. But we’ve had so much trouble with Google Play that it was taken down. I’m sorry.
Hi, I am trying to download this app, but my child has an android and I can’t find it in the google play store. Help please! 🙂 Thank you!
We don’t have it on Google Play just yet, but it’s coming. 🙂
I just downloaded this for my 4 year old. She is really enjoying it. We had a similar one, but we like yours much better. The sounds are more pleasant, and there are more fun parts to it, and as a teacher, I appreciate the sensible (non-ABC) order of the letters.
Is there one for Google Play now?
No. I have pushed for it, but not yet.
I am a retired teacher living in Africa. I would love to learn how you created your materials to some here in a different language for African children. Please have you any suggestion?
I use Power Point, buy clip art from Teachers Pay Teachers, then save/secure the files with Adobe DC Pro. 🙂
Are any of th he apos available on Google play? I do not have apple I store
Most of our apps were on Google Play. But we’ve had so much trouble with Google Play they were taken down. I’m sorry.
