Writing Numbers with Trace & Try Handwriting Pages

By thisreadingmama 15 Comments

Teaching my kids how to write their letters has come more naturally for me as a reading specialist. Writing numbers? Not so much. It happens every year. We start working on counting on or some basic math facts and I realize my child has no idea how to write her numbers.

So this year, I finally did something about it! I created some Trace & Try Handwriting Pages for writing numbers for my Kindergartner. {To be honest, my 1st grader used a few, too!} The free printable pack is available towards the bottom of this post. Look for the oval button.

Practice Writing Numbers – Trace & Try Pages

I really enjoyed making these pages and my two little ones enjoyed working on them together. I only required that they work on the harder numbers like 2, 3, 5, and 8. They asked to do all of them, so they worked on the rest as an extra activity from our choice board.

The pages have a built in support system if kids trace the numbers in the left-hand column first. Once they’ve done that, kids can trace the number again in the next column, which provides a little less support. Finally, kids try writing the number by themselves with a little less support.

Altogether, the child gets to practice writing each number 15 times.

coloring in the pictures that correspond with the number

The reward {if your kids like to color like mine do} is that kids get to color in the pictures that represent the numbers when they are finished writing.

One of my favorite things about the coloring portion is that I worked hard to arrange almost each group of images in a different way. For example, with our 5 page, we talked about the eggs – that 3 on top plus 2 on bottom equals 5. We did the same thing with the gloves. 2 gloves plus 3 gloves equals 5, too.

Trace and Try Zero Page example

Zero was a bit tricky, since I didn’t need images. Instead I designed words that are synonyms for zero so kids can color in the words. My daughter loved it, so it was still a hit. 🙂

Perfect timing! We just finished working on numbers in our math book but I feel my daughter could use some extra practice on forming her numbers correctly and neatly. Thanks so much for sharing these wonderful sheets!

Just wondering if you ever finished to 20? That would be a big help in my kindergarten classroom.
