Long Vowel Word Study App

By thisreadingmama 32 Comments

I’m over the moon excited to announce that our Long Vowel Word Study App is NOW AVAILABLE for purchase!

The Long Vowel Word Study app follows the principals and activities found in the word study approach mentioned in my ebook, Teaching Kids to Spell and in my 10 Days of Teaching Spelling Through Word Study.

The Long Vowel Word Study app was created for spellers in the Within Word Pattern Stage of spelling. Spellers typically begin this stage at the beginning of 2nd grade and exit it in the beginning of 4th {although students who are younger or older may also be in this stage of spelling and reading.} Read more about this spelling stage in Teaching Kids to Spell or in Words Their Way.

This App is Right for Your Child When:

  • he can read & spell short vowel words consistently, even longer words with blends and digraphs, such as stand or thump
  • he confuses his spellings of long vowel words. Early in this spelling stage, this may look like WATE for wait. Later in the stage, it may look like CRALLED for crawled.

Long Vowel Word Study App

In our Long Vowel Word Study app, you’ll find the same four activities from our Short Vowel Word Study App with EIGHT levels of activities {see the vowel patterns covered in the next section}!!

1. Sort It- Users will sort words based on their vowel patterns.

2. Find it- Kids have 4-6 pictures or words and are to find the one that doesn’t fit, based on either its sound or word pattern. {This is trickier than you may think!}

3. Spell it- Pictures are displayed with letter tiles. Users move the letter tiles to spell the words.

4. Write it- Kids will listen to the word spoken and spell it with their finger. If a child needs help, a hint helps users remember the vowel pattern included in the word. Kids can also compare their spelled word to the correct spelling.

Long Vowel Word Play Section

*Word Play- Also included is a Word Play Section containing three word fun games: 1- BINGO, 2- Slingshot, and 3- Word Crush {played in a similar manner as Candy Crush}.

Yes ma’am. iTunes has to approve all the apps for their store, so we’re waiting on that. 🙂

We’re working on that feature right now. We will have a website for educators to load their own sorts for students. Exciting!

Looks great! I’m always looking for materials that have kids sort one target sound (i.e., /ee/) by all of its spellings. They’re hard to find. I’ll get this today…

Is this long vowel version (iOS) only for the iPad?

Yes. It would be too difficult to play on the small screen of an iPhone. It would work on an iPad mini though.

Downloaded this over the summer and it has worked great, until now… The sound will not work. I deleted and re downloaded it to see if that fixed it but unfortunately if did not. Any one else have this problem? How to fix it? Would love to continue the use of this app!

Do your other apps have sound? If so, you might want to check the settings on the app itself, as you can turn off the sound within the app.

I have the Long Vowels and Short Vowels Word Study apps. How do I unlock the games on the long vowel study app? Can I choose specific skills or levels to work on with the apps? If yes, how do I choose?

Sorry that I’m just seeing this comment. The games are unlocked after kids work in the learning section and earn stars to unlock the play section. Hope that helps.

I’m having issues with hearing any audio in either app. I hear sound on other apps and have turned the sound on and off in both apps. Is this a common problem? So many parts of the app ain’t functional without sound.

Strange. Are you new to the apps? Have they made sound for you before? I might try deleting it and then putting it back on my device to see if it works. The sound works on both of our apps, so I’m not sure how to help exactly. Let me know if you keep having problems and maybe I can find out more.

Hi, I’m just wondering if the long vowel with a ‘silent e’ is explained in that way on the app; our children understand it as a split digraph so don’t want to confuse them with different terminology.
    Thanks, Jo

The silent e isn’t explained in the app, so I don’t see how it could confuse your children. Kids just interact with words that have the silent e in them by sorting, spelling, finding, etc. Hope that helps!

You need to purchase an app from each device. Kids can share on each device.

Hi, I have been a follower of your blog for several months now and find your resources so valuable in my work with struggling readers. Kudos to you!
I am interested in purchasing several of your apps, and was wondering whether they are sold as a bundle in the app store, or only individually. Thanks!

This app was recommended by my daughter’s speech therapist. Unfortunately, the audio (sound/music) doesn’t work (which seems like a not uncommon problem, judging by the comments above). I have tried: un/reinstalling; rebooting the iPad; checking the volume (other apps generate sound fine); keeping the OS version up to date. Not sure what else to try, frankly. Did anyone ever get a solution sorted?

The sound works just fine on all my devices, so I’m not sure what to tell you. I’m going to ask the app developer and get back to you.

Looking forward to your reply. My only suggestion to the developer is to make sure to uninstall all but the Long Vowels app. Perhaps there is some shared library or something supplied by one of your other apps, that the Long Vowels app is missing (I encountered a similar issue many years ago with another system/app combination, and that was the problem)

I’d encourage you to correspond directly with the developer. His email is quikclosepro@gmail.com and his name is Tom.

It isn’t anymore. Google Play removed it and we’ve been “fighting” to get it back up without any luck. Kind of frustrating! 🙁

I wish Google Play would play nicer. We’ve had such a hard time with them. Maybe they’ll make it easier for app developers down the road to update and get apps posted.
