Teaching Kids to Spell
Enough said. Just reading those words may make your hair stand on end or send shivers up your spine. For some, teaching kids to spell ranks right up there with teaching kids to write or getting a root canal. Teaching kids to spell can also conjure up lots of questions, such as:
- Is spelling instruction even important?
- If so, what words do I teach?
- Should I let my child misspell words…ever?
- Why does my child misspell words, even after he’s learned them?
- What should spelling instruction look like?
- How do I teach spelling effectively?
- Is it phonics or is it sight words?
- What kind of spelling instruction does my struggling reader need?

I am very excited to announce the launch of my new ebook (PDF file), Teaching Kids to Spell: A Developmental Approach to Spelling. I believe spelling is probably one of the most misunderstood topics within literacy. I certainly did not understand it when I first started teaching in the classroom. But after being introduced to a developmental approach to spelling and teaching through the lens of this model with all kinds of students, it clicked for me and for my students (including my own children).
Please note: The intended audience for this book is parents, but teachers and tutors could also benefit from the information in it. My own understanding of spelling development deepened as I was writing it.
Topics Covered in Teaching Kids to Spell
You can look through the Table of Contents from my book (see above) and read through some of my descriptions below to get an idea of what you’ll find inside:
- Debunking some of the myths about misspellings, such as “Something is wrong because my child cannot spell as well as he can read.”
- Understanding WHY kids misspell words
- Spelling Development- How do spellers progress in their understanding of the alphabet, phonics, and word meanings?
- Invented Spelling– What is it? Is it okay? When is it NOT okay? Does it serve a purpose?
- Spelling Strategies- Strategies to teach spellers in every stage of spelling, including ideas such as: stretching out words and writing the sounds the child hears, studying word patterns or chunks, visualizing words, and studying word meanings as they relate to spelling.
- Sight Words- What are they? How important are they? Ways to hold kids accountable to the sight words you have taught.
- Hands-On Spelling Ideas for teaching the alphabet and phonics patterns (There are over 100 ideas in this chapter!)
- Exceptional Products and and Resources for Teaching Spelling- I’ve included a ton of resources and products to help teach spelling to your child.
- An appendix containing many practical charts and printables to guide you through the process of teaching kids to spell. {You can download this Printable Resource Pack for teaching spelling by subscribing to This Reading Mama via email!}

I can’t wait to get the book and read it!
You have another book out already – you are amazing! I need this book =)
Not sure if amazing is the right word. Crazy maybe. 🙂
Just purchased it and can’t wait to read it! Thanks! =)
Parents always ask me how to make spelling fun, So exciting to see this in an e-book. What a great resource for parents
What an amazing resource! This looks really wonderful.
Thank you so much for all your freebies 🙂 They are so helpful!
Looks like an amazing resource. I would have used it when my kiddos were younger. We used Spell to Write and Read with our kids for a while and then went to studied dictation after they knew the phonograms, etc. Uncovering the Logic of English is also a great read to help understand the way words and letters work.
Can I purchase without using paypal?
Hi Karen, I believe you can choose to pay with a credit card instead of creating a paypal account.
I have tried on several occasions to enter my e-mail address for this, but I do not seem to be getting the e-mail. 🙁 I would love to try this with my daughter. Any help would be appreciated.
This looks AMAZING, Becky!!!
Thank you, Katie.
I have subscribed, but how do I download the book.
I subscribed, but how do I download the book.
At the bottom of your email feed, you should see a link to all the past subscription freebies. The appendix PDF file of Teaching Kids to Spell is located there. The book is not the subscriber freebie. Just the printable appendix pack. 🙂
I love how afforable your ebooks are. Thanks for another great resource!
Hi, Would like to know if you ship overseas – singapore?
Well, the book is in PDF form, so you can purchase it no matter where you live. Does that help?
For what age child is this appropriate? I have a soon to be 4th grader who reads extremely well, but has never been able to get past the spelling tests. He has the ability to “memorize” adequately enough for spelling tests ( ~ 80%) – but he cannot continue to spell those words consistently correct afterwards. For example, he oftentimes still spells “when” as “wen”. His last years teacher said kids are either spellers or they aren’t. Thanks!
Ages pre-K through 6th grades. You should be able to find resources that will help you to help him in the book. While some kids struggle more than others, we need to be teaching all our kids developmentally appropriate spelling strategies. 🙂
My son is in 3rd grade. (we homeschool) He is probably reading on a 2nd grade level at this time. He hates to write. I think it is because he cannot spell, sometimes even simple words. We have done some spelling tests, but just orally. Do you think this book can help me with his spelling?
Absolutely! You were my target audience when I wrote it.
