Short Vowel Sorting App – Updated!

Feel free to read about the app in this post.

Or if you’re more visual, you may want to watch the series of quick {and amateur} videos I’ve posted on Instagram about the updates!

The main screen of the app features three levels: 1- Word Families, 2- Short Vowel CVC Words, and 3- Longer Short Vowel Words {words with blends and digraphs}.

Short Vowel Sorting App - levels of play

Learners select the level they need to work on, which helps you differentiate instruction for your learners.

Once on the level they select, they pick a sort. This is one way the updated version is much better. In the older version on the app, the sorts were random. Learners can specifically choose their sort number and short vowel skills now.

Below the sorts, you can see which short vowels will be covered. In the word family section, sorts 1-5 are picture sorts while sorts 7-14 are word sorts. All other sorts are word sorts.

Sort, Spell, Write, or Play Games from Short Vowel Sorting App

Once learners have selected the sort they need to work on, there are four options they can pick from. 1- Sort the words, 2- Spell the words, 3- Write the words, or 4- Play Games with the words {NEW! These are the same games from our Sight Word Games App!}

1- Sort the Words

The sorts also look a little different, too! The earlier sorts in Level 2 and Level 3 DO NOT have “oddball” words. But the later sorts in these sections DO have “oddball” words.

This prevents learners from just sorting by the vowel they see in the word and “forces” them to read and pay attention to the SOUND the vowels make. Sometimes “oddball” words has a visual difference, like make {seen above}. Other times, the “oddball” words are different because of the vowel sound, like what.

*Including “oddballs” in the sorts replaced the “Find it” activity from the previous version of our Short Vowel Word Study App.

2- Spell the Words

In the Spell Section, learners spell the words from their sorts with letter “tiles” on the screen.

Spell the word with letter "tiles"

This is GREAT for helping kids sound through each word to spell it, then read it back. When learners touch and drag the letters, they make their sound.

3- Write the Words

In this section, learners trace, then write each word from the sort.

trace and write the short vowel words from the sorts

The word always remains visible in this section so you can be sure your learners are practicing the words correctly.

4 – Play Games with the Words

This is one HUGE part that’s been added to the app – GAMES!

games are included in the updated app

The same FIVE games that are in our Sight Word Games App are now in our Short Vowel Word Study App! Woohoo! Learners can play games to reinforce the spellings of the words included in the sort they picked from the sort menu.
