Watch My Helpful Video

Learn more about beginning c and k in my seven-minute YouTube video.

In this video, you’ll learn:

  • The SPELLING GENERALIZATION to help you know when to use beginning c and k
  • A SONG/CHANT you can use to teach your learners how to spell beginning /k/
  • WHEN to teach the beginning /k/ sound
  • SOME EXCEPTIONS to the spelling generalization

Write and Read Pages for Beginning C or K

This write and read pack is a simple way to help learners practice listening for and spelling words with the beginning /k/ sound. Is it spelled c or k?

The first activity in the pack is write and read cards. These are great to use with a small group or one-on-one with learners. I recommend laminating, cutting them out, and then hole-punching them in the top corner so you can make a simple flip book.

Learners can use a dry erase marker to finish the word using the beginning letter: either c or k. After learners write the word, they read the word they’ve spelled.

Two NO PREP pages have also been included in the pack. Learners pick the beginning letter that completes the word and matches the picture.

Spelling the k Sound - Charts and Songs - This Reading Mama

I highly recommend teaching your learners the song/chant that I’ve shared before in this post to help your learners remember how to spell that initial /k/ sound. You’ll notice that I also use in my YouTube video.
