Vowel Pattern Spelling Chart
Because many vowel sounds in English have ambiguous spellings, it’s nice to have ONE SPOT to see them all. This FREE chart was specifically designed for older spellers {2nd grade and up}.
If you teach younger learners, you may enjoy this picture chart or our Vowel Phonics Cards instead.
As you teach {or as you review} the spelling patterns, ask your learners to fill in their chart for each vowel sound. If you haven’t taught or reviewed a certain pattern, learners can leave it blank until you do.
I highly recommended that you start with the short vowel sounds, then move to the other vowel sounds on the chart. In general, the spelling patterns on the chart move from most common spellings to less common on the chart.
Once learners have a variety of spelling patterns to choose from for each sound, learners can then use the “Try It Spelling Page,” where they attempt to spell a word different ways to help them discover the correct spelling.
For example, if a child wants to spell salt, they could attempt it by spelling SALT, SAWT, and SAUT in the chart. If they’re still unsure, they can look it up in a spelling dictionary.
The patterns you’ll find on this free chart are:
- Short Vowel Patterns – short a, e, i, o, u PLUS short ea {bread} and short ou {rough}
- R-Controlled Patterns – ar, or, w+ar, er, ir, ur, and w+or
- Long a Patterns – a_e, open a, ai, ay, ei, eigh, ey, and ea {great}
- Long e Patterns – e_e, open e, ee, ea {leaf}, final y {candy}, ie {shield}, and ey {key}
- Long i Patterns – i_e, open i, igh, final y {cry}, final ie
- Long o Patterns – o_e, open o, oa, ow {bow}, final oe, and ough {dough}
- Long u Patterns – u_e, open u, oo {as in moon}, ew, final ue, ui, and ou {soup}
- The /ou/ Sound – ou {cloud}, ow {crown}, and ough {bough}
- The /Ʊ/ Sound – oo {book}, u {push}
- The /oi/ Sound – oi and oy
- The ô Sound – al, aw, au, ough {thought}, augh, w+a, and qu+a
