Spelling the K Sound {with freebies}

By thisreadingmama Leave a Comment

The /k/ sound is one of those trickier sounds to spell. It is k, c, ck, or another spelling? Today, I’m sharing some resources that can help with spelling the k sound.

Spelling the K Sound

I don’t believe in teaching hard and fast phonics rules for the most part {because specific phonics rules are often broken in the English language}. I do think, however, that we can gather information about phonics generalizations by looking at patterns and spellings that words share.

Take for instance the spellings of the /k/ sound.

There are certain patterns we can see from words that have a /k/ sound at or towards the beginning of the word. Generally speaking, the /k/ sound is spelled k if it’s followed by an e, i, or y {y is very uncommon}. Likewise, the /k/ sound is often spelled with a c if it’s followed by a consonant, a, o, or u.

There are also phonics generalizations we draw from the /k/ sound in the final position. While I won’t bore you with all the nitty-gritty details, you can download the freebies {towards the end of this post} that give more details.

Spelling the k Sound Songs to Remember Spelling Patterns

In the download is a k sound spelling chart and sounds of k songs for the initial and final position. The initial k song is a a little adaption from something my daughter has learned this year. I have full permission to share it with you. Both songs are set to a familiar tune.

These resources can be a visual resource to place at a writing center, in a writing folder, or in a learner’s work area. The free resources in the download come in color & blackline!
