These simple missing vowel worksheets are a simple way to help learners listen for short vowel sounds in simple CVC words.
Beginning and ending sounds are typically heard before vowel sounds, so if your learners aren’t ready for short vowels, yet, you may enjoy our Beginning Sound worksheets and Ending Sound worksheets!

You might think these are just simple worksheets, they can pack a punch as far as literacy skills go.
Learners build their phonemic awareness by isolating sounds in words. They build their phonics skills by connecting those sounds to printed letters. AND if you have them write the letters, they are working on handwriting, too! Woot!
Write the Missing Vowel Worksheets {for CVC Words}
In this pack, you’ll find TEN DIFFERENT missing vowel worksheets for CVC words. And you won’t find a repeated piece of clip art in the entire pack! Wow!
Learners name the picture, then decide what the missing vowel sound is. {A picture key is provided for each page, just in case you or your learners aren’t sure what a picture is showing.}
Make them more hands-on by asking learners to fill in the missing vowel with letter tiles or letter lacing beadsΒ {seen in the first image of this post}.
Two benefits of making them hands-on is 1- it can be helpful for learners who struggle with spellingΒ and 2- they can be re-used.
You can also use them as simple worksheets, where learners fill in the missing short vowel with pencil. The benefit here is that learners are practicing handwriting!
I highly recommend using the hands-on approach one day and then using the pencil/writing approach the next so you get two uses out of them!

I have used your work several times and absolutely love your creativity, clarity of purpose, simply put meets my needs. BUT the engine you use to download now throws red flags on my machine for unsafe website. Am concerned with downloading again.

Very strange. I use Adobe Pro DC, which is pretty standard for bloggers who create printables. And I upload to my blog with Google Chrome, which is also standard. Have you tried any of the tips from this page? Perhaps something on your end needs to be updated?? –> https://thisreadingmama.com/downloading-printing-help/

Thank you Becky for this dedicated and generous work that you do. These packages are perfect for the tutoring work that I do with newcomer and refugee children in my community. The fun, hands on yet super phonics based materials is exactly what these hard working, committed-to-learning children need as they learn English AND learn to read. They are so grateful to have access to education, and I’m so grateful to you for giving me what I need to help them. Blessings!
