Is your student/child having a difficult time learning those tricky short vowel sounds? My Kindergartner can remember them if her short vowel wall charts are nearby, but if they’re not, she’s at a loss. While I have found some short vowel songs online, they all have the same tune. She gets confused with which vowel sound fits each song since all the tunes are identical.
That’s why I created some short vowel songs for her that all have DIFFERENT tunes. While we have only learned three songs so far, I have already seen that she is remembering the three sounds MUCH better and is not confusing the songs/sounds! Yay!

In all my years of teaching and tutoring, it seems that the short vowel sounds are the hardest vowel sounds for kids to remember. I have tutored kids who were already learning difficult long vowel patterns, but had never mastered their short vowel patterns. This became a huge hindrance in their reading, as you can imagine!
Part of the reason I think they are difficult to learn and remember is that their sounds are made in very similar places in the mouth. Don’t believe me? Say pen. Now say pin. Did your tongue or lips move very much between those words? Not likely. Another reason short vowels may be harder is that they don’t say their name like long vowels do.
To combat this short vowel issue, I created 5 different short vowel songs to help with learning the sounds.
Each song is written to a familiar tune and features words with that short vowel. The songs can be learned as is or students can change out the underlined words for other short vowel words. I like to use the short vowel cards from my ebook, Printable Spelling Activities & Games. In this ebook, you can also find images that match each short vowel word, which can become an extension of the songs.

Thankyou for the song resources, I am studying Early Childhood teaching and have a pre-school child I would love to practice these with. Very clever.
