Sometimes, it’s fun to mix in a phonics warm-up game before diving into reading time. To do this, I usually pick something quick and easy, like our low-prep phonics games, that won’t take more than a few minutes to play.
Recently, I created a simple short vowel game with longer short vowel words {like stump and crash} for my 1st grader. I added a couple simpler short vowel game boards for three easy, no prep Short Vowel Roll and Read Games {also included are black and white game boards}.

Short Vowel Roll and Read Games
These games are SO simple! Just print them out, grab a die, and playing pieces for each player. Then roll and read away. You can find the complete set of directions on page one of the printable with some variation ideas, too.
The game doesn’t take long to play, so I will warn you that your student may just beg you to play again! 🙂 In this case, just say, “Yes!” and play one more time before diving into your reading.
Just in case you’re wondering, my first grader is currently reading one of the first stories from All About Reading Level 3 and some of the BOB Books from Set 4 {find our Set 4 printables}, so these games fit nicely with those levels. {He also has a serious addiction to the Elephant and Piggie books, so we keep these close by as well!}

Oh, these are great Becky! I always like to start out with a fun game before my first graders dive into a reading lesson, too. Thanks!
Your short and long vowel games are just wonderful and help my students remember the sounds. They are a great motivator..
Yay! I’m so glad you have found them useful in your classroom! 🙂
