Long Vowel Roll and Read Games
It can be fun to play a quick warm-up game to get kids thinking about phonics patterns before they read. This is especially true for struggling readers, who often need extra support before they read.
These games are very simple and there’s virtually no prep work! Just print them out, grab a die, and playing pieces for each player. Then roll and read away. The complete set of directions is on the first page of the printable, with some ideas for 1-4 players.
It only takes a few minutes to play these warm-up games. And that’s exactly what you want in a before reading activity. After all, it’s the actual reading that you want to be your main focus.

Thank you so much for supplying this fun resource! I look forward to playing this game with my kindergartener while he’s learning at home with me on account of coronavirus. 🙂
Hi Becky!
It certainly is a small world! I used to work at the science center and Harris Teeter and remember seeing you all the time. I have been living in South Korea for almost four years now. I use your website and really enjoy all the effort you put into it and teaching.
Thank you for all that you do and being willing to share!
Wow! It is a small world! 🙂
