Want some Thanksgiving-themed short vowel coloring pages? You’re in the right place! This year, I created some short vowel coloring pages for my Kindergartner, who is working on mastering her short vowel sounds. I added a few more pages and created some turkey short vowel coloring pages {free download at the END of this post}.
If you’ve been reading some of my recent posts on short vowels, you know that learning the short vowel sounds has not come easily for her. We recently shared our short vowel songs, which she LOVES, and have shared our short vowel wall charts and other short vowel coloring pages in the past.
Since she loves to color, I thought more coloring pages would be a crowd-pleaser. If you’re not into coloring pages {or they are frowned upon at your school}, keep reading because this can easily be modified into a spelling activity, too!!

Turkey Short Vowel Coloring Pages
Included in the free download {found at the end of this post} are two short vowel pages for each vowel. The first page includes only CVC words, which only have three sounds, like in the word cat. The second page for each vowel requires that kids stretch their ear a little bit with longer words. Instead of just 3 sounds, words might have 4 sounds, like block or sled.
Listening for sounds in words {known as phonemes} is a crucial part of learning to read AND spell, so I knew that creating two levels would give her a place to grow.
Before she started coloring, together we identified each image {a picture key is included on the last page of the download}. I asked her to go ahead and cross out the pictures that didn’t have the featured vowel sound. This way, I could let her color the page independently while I worked with another child. No worries if your child colors incorrectly; just cross it out later when you go over the words.
After she had colored, I challenged her to spell the word under each image for that short vowel. Kids could also do this on a separate sheet of paper.
Of course, spelling is a great way to work on segmenting and blending sounds in words. Spelling is like practicing phonics backwards. Instead of seeing a letter and figuring out its sound (phonics), kids hear the sound and then have to pick the letter(s) that represent that sound (spelling). Love, love spelling!
