Short Vowel Playdough Mats

These short vowel playdough mats are perfect for MBug {almost 5}, as she needs a little practice on her ending sounds and hasn’t mastered reading CVC words just yet. These mats work well for kids who need to work on their short vowel sounds, but they work beautifully for kids who just need to work on beginning and ending sounds because they only require the child to listen for the beginning and ending sounds in each word.

Included on each short vowel mat are 10 CVC images. For example, short i features pig, mix, fin, win, dig, zip, lip, wig, bib, & rip. The idea is that kids look at the images and spell each short vowel CVC word with playdough in the middle of mat.

MBug is my early bird and was up super early one morning this week, so I printed them off, laminated them {you could also slip them into a plastic sleeve protector}, and away we went with playdough! Here are a few images of her in her PJ’s before she even ate breakfast.

Short Vowel Playdough Mat Recording Sheet

If your child/students are doing this at a center or for indepdent work, it’s nice to have an accountability piece. Included in the pack are recording sheets where students can write the words they have made on their playdough mats {10 lined spaces for the 10 short vowel words.}
