The short vowel patterns in CVC words are the first ones kids typically learn after they know their alphabet sounds {along with beginning sight words.} I like to start with word families then move to reading mixed CVC words before moving to long vowel patterns.
This Rhyming Blackout Game {free download at the end of this post}, featuring mixed CVC words, is a super fun way to get kids not only reading those CVC words, but also thinking about the patterns in them that they can use to read other words that rhyme with them. If your kids are ready for more of a challenge, you can find short vowel words with blends and digraphs in our Word Family Blackout Game.

Preparing CVC Words Rhyming Blackout
Included in the pack are 24 picture/word cards and 6 different BINGO-type boards. Print off the cards and boards. I recommend that you laminate them, but you can also slip the boards into plastic sleeve protectors. Gather a collection of manipulatives that you can use to cover the board. We used our plastic chips.
You may wonder why I made only 6 boards and not a set for an entire classroom. I am a firm believer in small group teaching when it comes to things like reading and phonics. I’ve included blank boards you can fill in yourself if you want or need more.
Playing Rhyming Blackout with CVC Words
All players {for 2-6 players} get a game board and 9 counters or manipulatives of some kind. All picture cards are cut out and placed face down in pile. One at a time, players take off the top card, identify the CVC word and then
players look for a WORD THAT RHYMES on their game board.
The first player to “blackout” his entire board, wins!

I love this idea, but there are not cards for every word on the gameboard!
You’re right in that you won’t find cards for every word because it’s designed for kids to find the rhyming word on their board. With that said, there could be words I somehow missed for the rhyming pair. If you find some, feel free to email me which ones they are and I’ll fix them. becky{at}thisreadingmama{dot}com. Thanks!
Good game to practice rhyming! Thanks for sharing! (If the teacher does’t prepare plastic chips, s/he can ask the player to put the matching cards on the board.)
Great idea!!
Thank you.
You have so many wonderful resources on your site. Thank you so much!
