5 FREE Reading Games for Any Word List | The Measured Mom for This Reading Mama

I’m Anna from The Measured Mom, and I’m excited to be guest posting at This Reading Mama! Like Becky, I was a teacher before becoming a stay-at-home mom. And I love creating new ways to help my kids learn to read.

reading the alphabet

When I first discovered This Reading Mama, I fell in love with Reading the Alphabet. Now I use it with my boys as a starting point for learning sight words, concepts of print, and more.

sight word books!!

In fact, I created my own series of free sight word books that go along with Reading the Alphabet. From community helpers to life cycles, my boys have loved learning to read using these colorful books.

I’ve found that adding reading games to Reading the Alphabet and my sight word books has been just the thing to help my current beginning reader crack the code. In fact, it was This Reading Mama’s CVC Rhyming Word Blackout that finally helped him read short vowel words quickly and easily. (Don’t miss the whole Short Vowel Activity Pack!)

Sometimes, though, you need a reading game that you can fill with whatever words you’d like. I created this set of fun follow the path games for just that purpose.

These reading games take just a few minutes of prep! Print one of five game boards. Then fill in the circles with words your child is working on. For this game board, I filled in “ar” words, since that’s something I’m working on with my five-year-old.

To play the game, we took turns rolling the die to get the elephant to its hay. If we landed on a word, we read it aloud. If we landed on a peanut, we got to roll again and move forward. If we landed on a mouse, we had to roll again to move backward. Of course by rolling again we always ended up with a new word to read.

You’ll find five animal-themed games in the download!

  • Get the elephant to its hay
  • Get the chicken to her chick
  • Get the worm to the garden
  • Get the mouse to the muffin
  • Get the sheep to the grass
