A few weeks ago, I shared a free game called 1-2-3 FLIP IT! with you. This is a game that my 4 year old son likes to play. As we were playing, an idea hit me to make it more of a challenge for those young readers who are ready {my son is currently not ready for this challenge game, yet}. Students who have a firm grasp on reading short vowel CVC words would be the perfect candidate. This challenge game is called 1-2-3 SPELL IT and it’s a short vowel spelling game!
1-2-3 SPELL IT! is played in a similar fashion as Uno. Each player gets 7 letter cards. The object is to be the first player to get rid of all your cards first. The way you get rid of your cards is by playing a letter card from your hand on the game board that will spell a REAL word {only real words are allowed}. Once you’ve spelled the real word, you must read it. Both players must agree that it is indeed a real word! Players take turns in this manner until one player is out of cards. Further directions are on the first page of the download.
In the deck, I’ve also included these Wild Cards. If a player has a Wild Card in her hand, she may substitute it for any letter {consonant or vowel} to help her create a real word on the board. When a player plays the Wild Card, she must tell what letter the Wild Card represents, then she must read the word created.

Thank you! My son loves Uno, and this is a great game for him.
So glad to hear!
Is there a way to play the game so that it is cooperative as opposed to competitive?
Maybe the focus could be taken off of who gets rid of their cards first, but how many real words the pair (or group) of students can create together as a team?
you have lot of stuff..good ideas…thank you
i want to teach my baby…my baby completed 3 years ..what are the activities good for her..you have lot of stuff..i confusssed to chose..pleas guide me
Hi Tara. The best place to start with young children is their letters and letter sounds. My 3 year old is doing Learning the Alphabet. We are mainly focusing on the letter names (upper and lowercase) at this point, but I will probably use it again with her next year and focus more on letter sounds. You can read more about it here–> https://thisreadingmama.com/learning-the-alphabet/
Love your work! Is there any way to get it in black and white? Without a color printer, some of the letters don’t show because they’re yellow and we only have black and white.
Great idea. I’ll put it on my list of things to fix. 🙂
