After kids learn how to read and spell short vowel words, it’s time for long vowel words! A great place to start is with CVCe words. My Kindergartner has just begun to explore CVCe words more. We even just recently released our CVCe Build and Spell Pack that he has used.
This week, he and his older brother {3rd grade} played our newest long vowel game, a rhyming game with CVCe words. It is played exactly like our CVC Words Rhyming Blackout, except it has long vowel words instead!

Playing Rhyming Blackout with CVCe Words
Print the picture cards and game boards onto cardstock {6 game boards are pre-made for small groups, while there are blank ones you can use to make more boards, if needed.} Cut all the picture cards apart and place in a pile face down. Each player also gets a game board. Find a tabletop or floor space {my boys used their blue lap desk and green lap desk…we LOVE these and use them all.the.time!!}
Players take turns picking up the top card and naming the object. Each picture card also has the word on it. Once the word has been said, all players look on their boards to see if they can find a word that RHYMES with the CVCe words.
Players then cover their boards, if they have the rhyming word.
