Color the Short Vowel Sound

By thisreadingmama 1 Comment

MBug {age 4} has taken an interest in listening for the middle sound in words, thanks to our Short Vowel Clip Cards. And seeing that the girl is quite addicted to coloring {the reason for our color by letter packs and our Color & Read emergent readers}, I decided to make her some Color the Short Vowel Sound coloring pages, similar to the Beginning Sound Coloring Pages from The Measured Mom.

Typically, kids first hear the beginning, then ending sounds in words. Listening for the vowel in the middle is a harder skill and it takes time to develop it. MBug hasn’t mastered it yet, but she kept asking for one coloring page after another!

Color the Short Vowel Sound Coloring Pages

Included in these short vowel sound coloring pages are 2 pages for each of the 5 short vowel sounds.

identifying the short vowel sound in the middle of the word

Together, you point to and identify each of the pictures {an answer key is provided on page 1 of the download}, deciding whether or not that short vowel sound matches the vowel on the page.

If it does, the child colors it in. If it doesn’t, you leave it uncolored.

And if you have an eager child who loves to color {as I do}, and she colors every picture on the page, even after you have identified which ones she should/shouldn’t color, it’s okay. Simply go back to the page when she is finished coloring and have her circle the correct pictures and/or “x” out the ones that aren’t correct.

I love your resources. I am a first grade teacher and want to make an interactive notebook this year. Thank you!
