A couple of years ago, I created some color and read emergent readers that my son in Pre-K used. This year, I’m using them with my 4 year old daughter, MBug, who is currently working through Reading the Alphabet. Because she knows several sight words already, these were a perfect fit.
But they needed some updating and at her request, I add a few more color books. Today, I’m sharing these newly updated {and added onto} emergent readers.

This pack not only includes emergent readers, but also early emergent readers, like the ones you can find in Learning the Alphabet. Because my 3 year old also insisted on coloring her own books, I thought she’d like a simple set of her own.
These have already been a great source of teaching new vocabulary words and for fine motor control, not to mention reading {although let me point out that my 3 year old is not really reading the words.}
Color and Read Emergent Readers
Included in this HUGE 73-pg pack are early emergent and emergent readers for the colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, pink, brown, and black!
They feature these basic sight words: a, I, look, at, the, see, can, you, it, is and this with predictable text.
To say that my kids like to color is a HUGE understatement, especially my 4 year old. She was the main reason I created of our Color by Letter Packs {summer pack, fall pack and Christmas packs.} She always loves to color her beginning sound emergent readers in Reading the Alphabet.
The early emergent reader was perfect for my 3 year old. We even had some great vocabulary discussions. “Mommy, what’s that?”
Disclaimer: Lest you think my very busy 3 year old stuck with coloring the entire book, she did not. Nor did I demand it from her. She LOVES to learn {I even created ABC packs for her}, but her interest comes before learning at this point in the game. We squeeze in as much learning as we can while she’s interested. And when she’s “done”, she gets down and does her thing {usually leaving a huge wake of mess in her path.}
Once MBug had colored her book, she read the pages with me. I picked the blue book because it had sight words she’d already learned from Reading the Alphabet. Note: the blue book has been updated since this photo was taken.
Because I chose the first book, I let her choose the color of the next book she would color and read. Of course, she chose pink {her requested color to add to the pack.} She also wanted to color with marker this time.
The girl was almost giddy coloring that pink book!
