By thisreadingmama 3 Comments

Today, I’m sharing our FREE Thanksgiving Poetry Pack {free download at the end of this post}! In it, you’ll find a free thanksgiving poem with literacy activities for K-2nd graders. The activities can work for homeschool instruction, after school instruction, small group instruction, or a literacy center. Lots of adaptations can be made! If you’d like to view all the packs we have, here they are: Back to School Poetry Pack, Apple Poetry Pack, Fall Poetry Pack, & Pumpkin Poetry Pack.

Thanksgiving Poetry Pack

NJoy {Kindergarten} looks forward to each pack. He likes me to challenge him to find the rhyming words when we first read the poem together. I love to watch the wheels turning in his head as he re-reads the poem to himself and then shouts out the answer. I always slip the one-page reader into a plastic sleeve protector so he can circle the rhyming words with a dry erase marker.

circle rhyming words and quotation marks

This time, we also talked about quotation marks. Although he’s seen these before in the books we read, he had no idea what they were called or why they were used. We talked a little about them {I also refer to them as “talking marks”} and I asked him to underline the words the person said in the poem with another color marker, based on the quotation marks.

His favorite, that I have to include each time we do a poetry pack, is drawing the mental image {a comprehension strategy}. Before I set him free to do this, we always talk about the mental images we have, based on the words in the poem. We had a great discussion about the word “feast”, found in the title of the poem.

As he started drawing, however, I noticed he drew tables and chairs outside. When I inquired why he was doing this, he said, “It’s like on Word World. They have a feast outside. So, I’m having my Thanksgiving feast outside.”

On another day, he cut apart the sentences from the poem and glued them back down.

There are enough poetry activities to fill an entire week’s worth. Sometimes we do them all. Sometimes we don’t. While we usually do several activities at the pocket chart, we did not get to it this week. This is on my radar for next week, as it is another way to get him to re-read for fluency. If you want to see a post in which we used most of the resources from the poetry pack, visit our Back to School Poetry Pack. The activities are the same for each pack, just on a different theme.
