Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of teaching in the classroom, being a private reading tutor, and homeschooling my own children. In all of those roles, I have been introduced to some fantastic books that have become favorites of mine {and favorites of my students/own children}.
In this 5-day series, I will be posting different kinds of texts for kids, from babies and toddlers to 5th graders. All of these make great read aloud texts. Depending on the age and development of your reader, these can also make for reading independent material for your students/children.
These are quality books that are new favorites or old favorites we have enjoyed reading over and over in different capacities. Some are texts I have memorized because I’ve read them so much!

Choosing Books for Kids
I’m quite picky when I buy books for my kids. I hoard collect texts rich in vocabulary, with stunning images, filled with facts, or containing a great story line. Many of these are Caldecott or Newberry award winners. Some are older and a few might be new to you. You won’t find licensed character books in this list, as I don’t consider these to be high quality. We have very few of these in our house and the ones we own have been gifts from other people. While I’m not including every single book we love, I’m including our top picks for nonfiction and for the ages of tots through 5th grades.
My hope is that you can use these book lists as a resource for library trips, birthdays or when Christmas rolls around. Please remember that every child is different. Just because one child loves a particular book doesn’t mean every child will. And this can differ within the same family as well. Finding texts that kids can read that line up with that child’s interest is key to choosing books for kids.

I can’t wait to see your chapter books!
I’m a new reader and I can’t wait to see your list. I am a veteran teacher and have a new granddaugther and I’m always looking for the perfect book for her.
I hope that you can find some new ones for her. These lists will include old and newer books (to us) that have become favorites. Congratulations on that new granddaughter!
