FREE Apple Poetry Pack - This Reading Mama

In August, I told you about and posted a new project my son and I are working on together {original poetry by me and original clip art from my 3rd grade son}. I’m calling them Poetry Packs and they are perfect for kids in Kindergarten through 2nd grade. The poems themselves would also work for preschoolers. They would just need more assistance with the accompanying activities.

This past week, my Kindergartner explored the poem, Apples. Here are some of the activities we did together based on the poem. I did not catch all of them on camera, due to a very active and destructive toddler {who will go unnamed…ahem}, so I’m only sharing a few.

find and circle the rhyming words in the apple poem

Upon our first reading of the poem, I slipped the full-page poem into a plastic sleeve protector. We read the poem together several times. We talked about what was happening in the poem and who “me” could be, as mentioned in the poem. He decided the poem was about him. 🙂 I gave him a dry erase marker and we looked for rhyming words in the poem and he circled them.

illustrating the apple poem

At another sitting, he illustrated the poem. He drew himself climbing a ladder to get apples, then he and I making an apple pie together from the apples he had picked.

glue the apple poem back in the right order

On another day, he cut apart the mixed up poem and glued the lines back in order then read it aloud to me.
