FREE Thanksgiving Word Bump: Works With Any Spelling List!

FREE Thanksgiving Word Bump~ Works with any Spelling List | This Reading Mama

You may be familiar with the math game called Bump! You may have even seen The Measured Mom’s very cool adaptation for sight words. Well, it was the combination of those two activities that gave me the idea for Word Bump, the writing game that works with any spelling list! (View more seasonal Word Bump! game links at the end of this post.)

Here’s how Thanksgiving Bump works:

print off and write a spelling list specific for each player | This Reading MamaStart by writing down a list of words for each player. The AWESOME thing about this game is that you can use ANY words you’d like for either player! Don’t just limit yourself to sight words. You could use word family words or words with a certain phonics skill, like paint, wait, braid, etc. Both my boys played each other {my oldest is 2nd grade, my youngest is 5 years old}. They each had their own word lists and the game was right on level for each! Festive word list templates are provided in the pack, but feel free to use any piece of paper to jot down words for the players.

There are 3 different levels of game boards included. My boys used the one for 2 dice. They took turns rolling the dice, adding up the numbers, then writing and reading their word on the shared game board with their colored dry erase marker.

erase another player's word and write your own on the game board | This Reading MamaIf a number was rolled for which the other player already had his word written in that spot, the player that rolled could “bump” off the word by erasing it

write a word from your spelling list on the game board | This Reading Mamaand writing his own word with his color.

the winner is the one who has more words written on the game board | This Reading MamaThe person who has the most words of their color written when all the spaces are filled is the winner! The thing I love about this game is there is no strategy…only luck. So, kids of different levels can play it with their own word lists and it matches their level. This works GREAT when you’re teaching students on multiple levels of spelling.

I love this – I’m saving it for when my daughter is old enough (she’s 2 1/2). Though maybe it’s possible to adapt for non-readers… perhaps play in teams or with pictures as well as the words. Anyway, thanks for sharing!

Thanks for this great idea. We have two days off from school, so I’m looking for some unique activities to keep us engaged. I’ll help my four year old who loves to add play with his sight words and my second grader can use her words from school!

I love that this game works for siblings on different lists. You are making me realize I need to get my five year old started on spelling lists… his reading is starting to take off so I know he can do it. I just need to get out the Word Study with him… but finding time is the question. How on earth do you do it all, Super Woman? 🙂

Oh, I’m far, far, far from Super Woman. These sight words are from Reading the Alphabet. We’re working through Set 1 of BOB Books now, so he has one-two new sight words a week with that.
