Today, we’re sharing our FREE Pumpkin Poetry Pack, perfect for K-2nd. If you’re not familiar with these, they feature original poetry by me and clip art from my 3rd grader. Younger children may also enjoy the poetry and activities, but may need extra support to do them. MBug (age 4) loves to watch us and sometimes participates in the poetry.

Here are some shots of NJoy (Kindergarten) with our Pumpkin Poetry Pack.
The first thing we always do is slip the one-page poem into a plastic sleeve protector, read it together several times, and find the rhyming words.
On other days, he…
illustrated the poem, after we’ve talked about the mental images in his head (a great comprehension strategy).
constructed the poem on our tabletop pocket chart.
thought of other words that rhyme with the words in the poem.
substituted rhyming words into the poem to make it silly.
Once we were finished with our silly rhymes, he took the blank cards from the rhyming activity, wrote random words on them and inserted them into the poem. His words didn’t rhyme or make any sense, but he was highly motivated and interested. He was spelling words and re-reading the poem over and over and I wasn’t about to stop him! 😉
*Disclaimer: The pumpkin poem that we used does contain the word Halloween. If you prefer not to have that word, I have provided another poem with an alternative line omitting the word Halloween.

You just reminded me that I have a table top pocket chart. Need to get that out for a center soon. Thanks for all the work you do that helps all of us who are working with young children.
