This week, NJoy {Kindergarten} explored our Fall Poetry Pack {the free download link is at the bottom of this post}. I had a blast writing this poem for him. And he enjoyed all the activities. He especially enjoyed re-reading the poem with expression and learning different ways to pause and build suspense with an ellipsis (…).

If you’re new to my poetry packs, you can see our Back to School Poetry Pack and Apple Poetry Pack by clicking on each link. These are FREE packs are designed for K-2nd graders with several literacy activities. Preschoolers may also enjoy these poetry packs, but may need adult assistance with the activities. The packs feature original poetry by Becky Spence {that’s me!} and clip art from my 3rd grade son.
Below are some of the activities we did with the Fall Poetry Pack this week.
First, I slip the poem in a plastic sleeve protector. Laminating would work better if you’re in a classroom or situation where multiple hands will be on it {THIS by far is my favorite at-home laminator}. We read through the poem, circling all the rhyming words with a dry erase marker.
I think his favorite activity this week was drawing his mental images. After we read the poem, we talked about what could be happening in the poem. We had an especially fun time with the ellipsis on the second to last line. Did the kids look both ways to make sure their mom wasn’t watching before they decided to take a leap? Did they shout “Let’s just leap!” or did they whisper it? Lots of fun dialogue over that one.
I love how he colored the color words in the poem and made sure he had a leaf of each color in his drawing. 🙂 I asked what happened to the word brown and he said since he colored on top of it, he had to write it back in. His thinking always cracks me up.
I don’t catch every activity on film, but I did get our pocket chart activity. I arranged each line of the poem out of order. His job was to read the poem, from the 1-page poem, and put the strips back in order. Then, he took our pointer hand and read the poem again to make it was correct.
