A Hands-On Literacy Manipulative {You will Love}

By thisreadingmama 96 Comments

If you’ve been reading my blog for very long, you know that I love hands-on spelling and literacy activities. Well, we have a new literacy manipulative that we have fallen in love with. It is SO versatile and works for so many literacy objectives!

A Hands-On Literacy Manipulative You will LOVE*We received this literacy manipulative free of charge. All opinions are my own. This post also contains affiliate links.

What is this Literacy Manipulative {that You’ll Love}?

Magnetic Letter Construction from Learning ResourcesIt’s Learning Resources’ Magnetic Letter Construction Kit. And it’s probably one of the most versatile literacy manipulatives I’ve ever owned. Seriously. The container may say Letter Construction, but it isn’t just for building letters!

What Can this Literacy Manipulative Do?

constructing letters with our new literacy manipulativeMBug {age 4} was the first one to get her hands on the Letter Construction Kit the day it arrived in the mail. I immediately took out the pamphlet that comes with pretty much any Learning Resources product you buy because the ideas ROCK in them. I was pleased to see a letter and number building guide included. I displayed it so MBug could see how to form the letters, a great pre-writing activity for preschoolers, by the way. Because there are so many kinds of pieces included in the kit, any letter {both uppercase and lowercase} or number can be formed.

spelling words with literacy letter kit

The boys {Kindergarten and 3rd grade} have used our Letter Construction Kit for spelling time. It has definitely been a favorite ever since it entered the doors of our home. Both boys use the construction pieces to build their sight words or word study words on their magnetic desks {a cookie sheet or refrigerator would work just as well}.

And, unlike some other letter building kits you may purchase, this one has plenty of pieces so there’s no need to re-use or share pieces when building multiple words {a HUGE plus in my book}.

hands-on work with punctuation ~ a great literacy manipulativeThen it got even more exciting…at least for this literacy-loving mama! We took certain pieces and used them as hands-on punctuation practice. The pieces work PERFECTLY to make question marks, exclamation marks, periods, commas, and quotation marks.

This literacy manipulative is highly adaptable and age-appropriate for even upper elementary students. It really is a great fit for anyone who is teaching and/or working with kids Pre-K through 5th grade…after school/homework, homeschooler, classroom teacher, or tutor.

    My class of 15 kinder-bears is split with those who were able to attend an academic PreK and those whose first academic experience was the day they walked into our classroom. The frustration those little ones are facing daily just breaks my heart. It is the 7th week of school and we are still learning how to hold a pencil/crayon/marker so the marks somewhat resemble a letter or shape. We use Heidi’s Songs DVDs and play-dough and any other sensory manipulatives we can to get those fine motor skills better tuned. This product would be one greater step to determining what types of lines are needed to form those letters. For mine who aren’t struggling, what great fun these would be to move on to punctuation and making sight and spelling word practice more fun.
