IP Word Family Reader & Activities
The free IP word family pack has four freebies:
1- an IP word family book,
2- word family puzzles,
3- sight word rainbow roll and write, and
4- a Roll & Read activity that reviews both the word family and the two new sight words.
Pictured below are a few of the freebies in action.
The IP word family book is printed front and back {short ways} and I staple it together with our long-arm stapler.
The sight word rainbow roll & write is just a simple printable based off a common spelling idea, rainbow writing your words. If you need past words from Learn to Read, you can find a rainbow roll and write page in all the free packs I’ve shared so far. You can also find free review words from Reading the Alphabet in my Rainbow Roll & Write post.
Roll & Read IP family – I love that my Kindergartner {I call her MBug on the blog} gets to practice reading with expression on these pages! She rolls, then reads the sentence that matches the die pattern. More than not, she underlines the word family word, but the page is designed for tracing the word family words.
More IP Word Family Activities
The activities shared below are only found in my Learn to Read Unit 3 {Short i} Pack. A 5-day lesson plan is included in the pack to give you ideas on how to use all the activities included. All of the color activities in the pack also come in black line!
Instead of working the puzzles this week, we used our standard pocket chart to sort and match with IG family and IP family words and pictures. Yes, she asked to pose for the picture. 🙂
She also had fun with our IP word family poem, which is a fun way to build comprehension. After we talk about the meaning of the poem {which usually is silly in some way}, she finds and underlines/highlights the new sight words we’re working on {in this case, what and she} and the word family words.
Sight Word Activities
The sight words I choose each week come from either the Dolch PP, Dolch P, or early in Fry’s first 100 words. You can find a printable spelling list of these on my blog.
Instead of using our letter stamps for the IP Word Family Stamp & Spell page, we went with letter stickers, like these. Sometimes, it’s just fun to change things up a little bit, isn’t it?
After chanting our sight words with our animal sight word chants {by the way, we have even more free sight word chants now!}, she used our dot paint markers to find the sight words in the word searches. One page is included for each new sight word from the lesson.
Our sight word activity mat can be used lots of ways. Sometimes we slip it into a plastic sleeve protector and sometimes we don’t.
There are two sets of directions on the mat for this reason. This time, she opted to get out our playdough, Banagrams, and dry erase marker to spell the sight word what. {The trace and try concept shown here is an idea I got from our trace & try handwriting pages.}
And, of course, one of her favorites is Color it Crazy! You can find all kinds of color by sight word pages, but these require more of learners. Not only do they have to find the words {kids might like to use a magnifying glass for this} to color the page, they have to spell/write the sight words in the color key, too!
Because the colors and words are randomly chosen, their pictures end up being colored in a crazy way! This makes it kind of fun because, if you teach multiple learners, everyone’s picture ends up being colored a little bit differently based on their own color key.
