Sight word chants have been around since the beginning of teaching sight words, I’m sure! And for good reason. When you show the spelling word, while getting kids to move and spell the word out loud, you’re hitting the auditory learner, visual learner and kinesthetic learner…all at one time! Talk about multi-sensory!
Today, I’m sharing some free* sight word chants that will get kids moving and sounding…like animals! If you’re in the school setting, you may just need to close your door before you break these out because the kids will have fun.

Animal Sight Word Chants
This year, my Kindergartner is working through my new Learn to Read curriculum. On a couple of days {per the 5-day lesson plan}, kids are to chant or spell their new sight words. Since we don’t have any sight word chants on the blog already, I solicited the help of my amazing Kindergartner and 1st grader to create some {so you know they’re kid approved}…animal style.
Before you are ready to use them, you’ll need a list of spelling words to display. We used sight words, but you could also use a list of phonics words. The sight word cards you see from above are a few from my Learn to Read curriculum. {These are only found in the bundle packs.} You can find more sight words in my printable sight word lists.
I placed all the sight words on the floor so my Kindergartner could see them. She went through the animal cards and picked the animal she wanted to imitate for each word.
Believe me when I say your kids will love galloping like a horse, squeaking like a mouse, wiggling like a worm, or smelling a stinky skunk {seen above.} It is important to note that the child needs to spell all the letters, then say the entire word. Example: say “t-h-e, the.”
One variation is to pick more than 1 animal chant per word. We have picked up to three per word at one time. This makes the craziness even more fun. 🙂

Try using a different internet browser. I just used Chrome and the PDF opened right up for me. See if that helps…
