FREE Sight Word Action Cards

By thisreadingmama 6 Comments

Are you looking for a fun, multi-sensory way to work on sight words? These FREE sight word action cards will do the trick! Not only do these action cards get kids using their bodies to spell words, they help with letter formation (a part of the handwriting process), too! These are a perfect fit for struggling readers!

Sight Word Action Cards

The key is to keep it simple! I advise only introducing one sight word action card at a time. If you introduce more than one, remembering the motions may become the focus. And this could distract learners from their purpose, to help sight words stick.

Each card (8 total) features a kind of exercise activity. The fun part is that learners move to match the formation of letters within the sight word.

So, if it’s a tall letter {such as h, t, or l}, learners reach up or move their hands up in some way. If it’s a short letter {like a, o, or c}, learners keep movement towards the middle of their body. Letters with a tail {such as y, g, or j}, get learners bending down or moving their feet.

This is my daughter spelling the word funny from the weight lifting card. {Note: she decided to push the bar out instead of resting it on her chest for the short letters, which also works!}

Why Sight Word Action Cards are So Effective

They’re multi-sensory! When the word is displayed, learners are seeing the word, saying the letters, and moving their bodies all at the same time. This allows the brain to make lots of different connections to the sight word.

While multi-sensory learning is important for all kids, it’s especially true for struggling learners. Why? Your typical workbook or worksheet is “1 dimensional” and only zeros in on visual learning. When you can add auditory and kinesthetic learning to the mix as well, what a powerful tool!

    Have printed from your site several times and am signed up. Now will only print pictures and all words and directions are black! I am wasting so much ink. Why won’t it print like the pictures? Please help.

      It sounds like you’re printing from the preview file of Adobe. Be sure to download the file to your computer and then print from that file. If that still doesn’t work, I’ve heard that it means you probably need to update your Adobe program. Hope that helps!
