Looking for some free resource with cutting practice with scissors? You’ll love all our free seasonal Cut it Out! Packs.
From the age of three, my daughter has LOVED cutting paper with scissors. Usually it results in a huge pile of paper scraps all over the floor. I was so tired of the mess and wanted a way to help her get her scissor/cutting “fix” without the huge mess afterwards. And that’s when our Cut it Out! Packs were born.

These FREE Cut it Out! Packs were created to help kids get in some cutting practice with scissors WITHOUT the messy aftermath.
Instead of throwing away tiny pieces of paper, kids take what they have cut out and DO something with them to practice another preschool skill. Purposeful was my goal! And these packs can grow with your child, starting with simple scissor practice for late tots/early preschool through Kindergarten.
Cutting Practice with Scissors
In these seasonal Cut it Out! Packs {see each available pack at the end of this post}, you’ll find FOUR levels of cutting practice: 1- straight lines, 2- curved lines, 3- zigzag lines, and 4-shapes.
To Implement the Activity:
1. Pick the level you’d like your child to try. Level 1 works great for beginners, while level 4 is perfect for more advanced scissor practice.
2. Print off either the Cut and Pattern Cards or the Puzzle Cutting activity {Level 4 does not contain both options} onto card stock. I like card stock because it’s sturdy and doesn’t flop around while kids are trying to cut it out.
3. Ask the child to cut along the lines. {Our favorite scissors for beginners are the springy Maped scissors. And they can “transform” to grow with your child, too!}
4. Once the child cuts, she can do other activities with the paper. For example,
she can make patterns with the cards, like you see above from our Christmas Tree Pack {You can also find this cut and pattern idea in all my FREE Pre-K/K Packs and Reading the Alphabet}. Once we’ve built different patterns, we like to use glue sticks to glue them down to sentence strips and display them for a while.
Or she can take the pictures she has cut apart and put them back together like a puzzle. The pictures can be matched up on the same day or a different day {or do it more than once}.
And they can be glued down to construction paper for displaying {4 on the front and 4 on the back}.
Level 4 is different than levels 1, 2, and 3. Instead of two different activities, there is just one. But it is SUPER FUN! Kids cut out shapes and glue down to form a picture, like a puzzle. They can even color in their picture to make it more personal.
