Floss Rule Spelling Mats
This pack features several different versions of some “Say, Build, Write” Mats for the floss rule. The floss rule states that when a 1-syllable short vowel word ends with f, l, or s, it is usually doubled. {Final z is often thrown into the mix, but I didn’t have tons of -zz clip art, so I stuck with f, l, & s.}
To challenge learners, however, some words are included on each mat that do not fit under the “floss” rule.
Six mats are included in two versions with two different levels for each version! This gives you plenty of options for differentiation! {See all the options below.}
No matter which mat your spellers need, they say the name of the picture*, build the word with letter tiles, and write the word on the line.
Version 1 includes six mats containing words with only h-digraphs, & final double letters. NO blends are included. Level 1 {see above} gives extra support by providing the boxes for the letter tiles. {Digraphs and double letters are boxed together.}
Level 2 of version 1 includes the same mats as Level 1, just without the boxes for letter tiles.
Version 2 includes mats containing words with h-digraphs, final double letters, AND blends. Level 1 gives extra support by providing the boxes for the letter tiles. {Again, digraphs and double letters are boxed together.}
Level 2 of version 2 has the same mats as Level 1, but they don’t have the boxes for letter tiles. {see above}
*If you’re not sure what word a picture represents, a picture key is provided for both versions in the PDF.

Thanks Becky for this resource, very timely as am about to introduce the rule to my sons.
Have a question though, I learnt the FLOSS rule to apply to f, l, s and z. Is there a reason why you’ve not included z too?
Yes, I have very limited clip art for -zz. I hope to get more eventually and can then add -zz to the mix. 🙂
Thanks!
Thanks so much for the floss mats. I have been looking for activities to add to my first grade Spelling and writing workshop.
You’re welcome! 🙂
I learned the rule as FIZZLES, which incorporates the z, too.
