Today, I’m sharing some free Welded Sounds Spellling Mats for those of you who use the Wilson Reading Program, an Orton-Gillingham approach to reading.
Last week, I shared some free digraph spelling mats with -ng as an ending digraph. Spelling words with -ng may be difficult for some students. If so, try these welded sounds spelling mats instead!

Free Welded Sounds Spelling Mats
With Wilson Phonics, sounds like -ing and -ank are taught as welded sounds, meaning their sounds can be difficult to separate into individual sounds. Go ahead. If you try to separate -ink into three sounds, it’s rather hard, right? This is especially true for learners who already struggle with the sounds of phonics.
In this free pack, you’ll find 2 different versions of 7 spelling mats. There are mats with words and mats without the words.
There are three mats for the -ng welded sounds like -ang, -ing, -ong, and -ung.
There are two spelling mats for the -nk welded sounds like -ank, -ink, -onk, and -unk.
And there are two mats with mixed review of the -ng and -nk welded sounds.
Ideas for Spelling the Words
Letter tiles are the perfect size for these mats, but the Scrabble letters or Bananagrams also fit well. You may need to mix and match the kinds of letter tiles you use to have enough for these spelling mats since they share a lot of the same letters.
You could also ditch the letter tiles altogether and use letter stamps. {These are our favorites.}
Slip the pages into a dry erase pocket and use dry erase marker to make these mats reusable. {Yes, these are a bit more expensive than plastic sleeve protectors, but they erase SO much easier!}

Super helpful – thanks so much. I never taught welded sounds when I was a classroom teacher. I’m an accidental homeschooler due to the pandemic and wasn’t sure how to help my daughter segment the sounds. Glad to know we can’t!
