The simple color the blends phonics pages are a great way to help learners use the beginning blend to read each word.

Color the Blends Phonics Pages

Unlike digraphs or vowel teams, these color the blends pages aren’t technically color the “chunk” pages. This is because the letters in blends all make a separate sound. But I’m including them in our color the chunk phonics pages series because they are a tricky skill for many young or struggling readers.

In this pack, you’ll find 2 l-blend pages, 2 r-blend pages, 2 s-blend pages, and 3 review pages. All the words included are short vowel words. Towards the bottom of each page are longer short vowel words that have a digraph or “twin consonant” at the end, such as track or bless.

Just like our other color the chunk pages, learners color the blends they find in each word.

They then sound through each word, reading it aloud. I love how VISUAL this makes reading those blends. They really do pop out once they are colored in.

Older struggling readers may want to use these pages with a highlighter marker instead of crayons. {There’s something much cooler about highlighters for those older readers!}

If you teach a learner who is struggling with reading words with blends, here are two more FREE resources you don’t want to miss:

These Blend, Dab, & Find pages are great for beginning blends. Learners say each sound separately, blend the sounds together, then find the pictures that begin with that blend.

Our Color, Read, & Find pages help learners read longer words with blends AND digraphs. Learners color in each letter, sounding through the word. Once they have the word, the color in the picture that matches.

      It sounds like a print setting. Perhaps click “Fit to Page” before you print. See if that works.

    When I have a student who is struggling in reading or math, or when I introduce a new skill, or when I need some practice work for my students, TRM is always the first place I look. I have told everybody in our school and a great many parents about your work to help children be successful.
    This morning when I needed to find material on rhyming words and on beginning blends, I immediately went to your website and it occurred to me that I had never thanked you. All of the free materials you provide is mind-boggling. I don’t think folks realize how much effort goes into the planning and the physical work of getting so many resources ready to print.
    I just wanted to tell you that your hard work doesn’t go unnoticed, that your generosity is much appreciated, and that many students have had that ‘lightbulb moment’ because of your resources. You are indeed one of a kind!
    Sincerely,
    Debbie Howell, First Grade Teacher
