Homophone BLACKOUT Games

These Homophone BLACKOUT games make practicing homophones fun! They include these homophones: hear/hear, know/no, ate/eight, right/write, who’s/whose, to/two/too, they’re/there/their, its/it’s, wood/would, your/you’re, knew/new, sea/see, by/buy/bye, eye/I, whole/hole, one/won, deer/dear, read {pronounced in the past tense}/red, meet/meat, threw/through, and where/wear.

Whew. That means over 20 homophone pairs or groupings are in this pack!

In this free pack, you also have 24 different BLACKOUT boards to choose from! If you teach more than 24 learners and would like to play whole-group, pair up a struggling speller with a stronger speller and have them play as a team.

homophone blackout games - cover your board

Homophone BLACKOUT is played like BINGO. The word is called out and used in the sentence {context is imperative with homophones}. Players look for the word on their board, and cover the word if they have it.

The difference is that players are trying to cover their ENTIRE board. When a player has covered the whole board, (s)he says, “Blackout!”

There are THREE different sets of word cards from which to choose in this free pack. That way, you can play the game more than once and not use the same sentences. Each set of cards is a different color so you can differentiate between the sets if your cards get mixed up. There are blue, red, and green sets of cards. {Only blue and red are pictured below.}

Each set of cards also comes with “teacher” cards AND “student” cards. {See the picture above.} “Teacher” cards have the word at the top and a complete sentence below. These work best when your learners can’t see the answer, like in a whole group setting.

The “student” cards include a homophone pair at the top of the card and a sentence with the missing homophone. These could work as independent practice, like at a center. {If you want these to be self-checking, you’ll want to write the answer on the back of the cards.}
