At-Home Reading Help & Tips

There are many aspects of reading that can make it feel daunting. Here are some resources that can help. We’ll cover book lists for kids, phonics help, sight word help, comprehension help, plus I’ll link to a few more posts with free printables that may help.

 

1. Book Lists for Kids

For book ideas, check out all our book lists here. You’ll find books for comprehension, picture books, chapter books, and more!

 

2. At-Home Phonics Help

Phonics seems like an necessary evil to some parents. After all, more words break the rules than don’t, right? Well, not really. While it may seem that way, single-syllable words in particular are very predictable. I know that might sound crazy to you, but it’s true.

Easy Phonics Assessments

Make sure you know what phonics skills your child needs to work on. If you aren’t sure, ask your child’s teacher. If you feel brave, try my free phonics assessment to get a clear picture of what your child needs to work on.

Once you know what your child is ready to work on, feel free to glance through my HUNDREDS of phonics printables. They’re organized by category so you can find what you need easier.

 

3. At-Home Sight Word Help

What words are sight words? Here are sight word lists and checklists for grades K-5 in case you need them:

  • Kindergarten, 1st grade, & 2nd grade sight word list & checklist
  • 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade sight word list & checklist

Once you know the sight words your child needs to use, what do you do with them? You can use our printable game boards or

check out 20 easy ways to practice sight words.

 

4. At-Home Comprehension Help

This is the silent part of reading that can be the hardest to monitor and teach.
