Reading Strategies: One Size Does NOT Fit All
When I first started teaching reading, I was given 5 wall posters from another seasoned teacher that I thought would be the end-all-be-all of reading strategies in my first grade classroom.
Then I started my guided reading groups and quickly discovered that several of my students had outgrown these strategies. I mean, “Let’s look at the picture for a clue,” doesn’t exactly work when there’s no picture! Now, what was I to do?
{If you’ve taught reading to multiple levels of readers for very long, you’ve run into the same situation. One size DOES NOT fit all.}
I’m ashamed to tell you that those 5 strategies sat on my wall all year. And to my defense, many of my readers did need to use them. But I didn’t really explore much further with my more advanced readers. I wasn’t quite sure how.
And if I’m completely honest, I didn’t completely unscrew that can of worms until my own son needed more advanced reading strategies for reading longer words. I read every book and watched every YouTube video I could on helping kids break apart longer words.
Reading Strategy Cards
If you teach primarily K-3 learners, my job today is to save you some time and energy! I’ve created 12+ reading strategy cards that will help you differentiate instruction with your reading groups. The strategies are perfect when you have a reader who gets to an unknown word {or a word they think is unknown}.
Those same strategies that I hung on my classroom wall are included, because they can be helpful for beginning readers. But there are also more advanced ones like, “Look for a base word.”

I could not get the cards today! It required me to fill in the info for the VIP mailing list but then never directed me to the printable.
The email should have come in an email. Did you get an email with the download link?
I just received these and they look great. One suggestion. You have one card that says does it sound right. You could make 2 more cards, one that says Does it look right and another that says Does it sound right. That way you are encouraging the kids to cross check.
You’re so right! I’ll have to add those!
Thank you so much for all your work-it is awesome and spot on! I recommend your site to so many mums and educators. 🙂
