AT-HOME MATH HELP & TIPS
So, you’re the math teacher now, too? Yep. Climb in the boat with me. I have to admit, math is my hardest subject. I just don’t have a “math brain.” I’ve always mixed up numbers and struggled to hold them in my head.
I have to admit that as I have taught math over the last 16+ years, I have begun to discover tricks that I don’t ever remember being taught when I was younger. This has made math easier in many ways. Kind of funny how that works!
Today, I’m sharing some freebies that I hope can help you review and/or teach math at home.
The newest resource we have are our FREE K-5 Math Folders. Just grab a folder, then print and glue what your kiddos need. If you have a child that struggles in math like I did, this is a MUST!
My #1 Math Tip
My number one tip when kids struggle with math {no matter their age} is make it MULTI-SENSORY. This means your kids need to touch it, see it, and talk about it all at once. This helps make math tangible and concrete for them.
For example, if your child struggles with counting on, get out some pennies and practice counting on. Put five pennies in a pile. Tell your child it’s five pennies. Place three pennies on the table beside the pile. Instead of asking them to count 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 for the pile, tell them to hold ‘5’ in their head and count on. Display a number line if needed.
If your child struggles with multiplication, draw pictures or use dried beans to SHOW how multiplication works. If you’re showing 7 x 6, explain that this means 7 groups of 6. Grab 7 glass cups or draw 7 circles on a piece of paper. Help them put 6 dried beans in each cup.
