Typically, learners are ready for simple r-controlled vowel patterns {ar, er, ir, or, & ur} when they are confident readers and spellers of short vowel words with blends and digraphs. The more difficult r-controlled patterns, like -air and -oar, usually don’t come until later because they have long vowel patterns.

These clip cards work great for some at-home practice or for a center. They’re great for phonics and a the clothespins gets kids working those fine motor muscles needed for handwriting!
To make them perfect for independent work, be sure to flip them over the dot or star the answer so learners can check it themselves.
You can also change it up a bit and let kids place objects on the correct answer. I placed four clip cards on a magnetic cookie sheet and used our Power Magnets. Fun!
