Magnetic letters are such a hands-on and frugal way to get kids spelling words. That’s why I’ve created lots of spelling mats for magnetic letters. So far, I’ve made mats for the most common beginning sounds, simple short vowel words, and long vowel {CVCe} words.
And today, we’re building short vowel words with blends and digraphs! {Free download found at the END of this post.}

If you’ve read my blog for very long, you know I am passionate about reading’s cousin, spelling. Taking time to zone in on the phonics patterns within words actually helps kids become better readers, too. This is true for all readers, but especially struggling readers who don’t usually “crack the code” of reading without more explicit, systematic instruction.
Building Short Vowel Words {with Blends/Digraphs}
So today, I’m sharing some building mats for longer short vowel words that are perfect for kids who are ready to move on from simple CVC words.
You can find magnetic letters at any store {even the $1 store}, but these lowercase letters from Educational Insights are our favorite magnetic letters. We have two sets. They have a big line up of all different kinds of magnetic letters, too!
In this short vowel pack, there are three different levels of building.
Level 1– This is for students who need the extra support of seeing the word spelled. Kids build the word they see in the space provided. There are 6 words included for each vowel.
Level 2– The word is no longer spelled for students. They look at the picture and spell the word in the space. All 6 words are focused on one vowel and are on one building mat.
Level 3– Mats include 6 different short vowel words for mixed review. {This is where NJoy is in his spelling in 1st grade.}
