FREE Magnetic Alphabet Build-a-Word
As MBug {currently 3 years old} is working through the alphabet this year school year, I created these Magnetic Alphabet Build-a-Word pages for her. {free download is at the end of this post}
We used these magnetic letters {I bought two sets to have enough letters}. I only included the most common consonant beginning letters in this activity pack. My purpose in making them was to have her practice letter recognition and beginning letter sounds {also some middle and ending sounds}, not to ask her to memorize how to spell these words. She also is also working on print awareness as she builds the words from left to right.
Most of the pages include CVC words. All the words are short and don’t take a long time to create with magnetic letters. {NJoy, at 5 years old, has also used these this year a bit to work on sounding out simple words, so they work for multiple ages of preschoolers or Kindergartners.}
To do this activity with your child, you’ll need to print the corresponding letter(s) you’re working on and place it on a magnetic cookie sheet. Ahead of time, I pull out the letters my kids need to build the words {so they’re not wasting time looking through my plastic bag of letters} and place them in a container to the side.
If this looks like something you think your kids at home {or classroom on kids} would enjoy, feel free to download. I do ask that you abide by the Terms of Use listed on the first page of the download. Thank you.

Love this printable. Thanks so much. I’ll be using this as soon as my soon is ready to start building words!
The download link goes to Fox News for me.

This looks like so much fun! I pinned it to my (CarlaINHouston) Free Printables!! board! Thanks for sharing it!!
This is so great! I would love for you to join this week’s Pinworthy Projects party! http://www.atkinsondrive.com/pinworthy-projects-link-party-12/
Becky, thanks so much for these printables. I used them this morning with my little boy who is two years and three months and we did six words together! He was very proud of himself but not quite as proud as his mum. Thanks again. Kate
That’s awesome!
Love these! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you Becky! Today I am sharing these with my preschooler. He loves building words with magnets.
Thanks so much. Be Blessed!
Thanks so much for sharing these they are awesome! Do you mind if I ask what font you used. I’ve been looking high and low to find one like it but haven’t had any luck. Thanks in advance.
how many sets of the magnetic letters did you have to buy to do this. Like does one set only have one of each letter? I’m sure you need more vowels. Thanks! awesome printable.
I think I bought 2 sets, but both sets had more than just one copy of each letter. I believe the sets I bought had multiple of the most common consonants and the vowels.
There isn’t the letters A, U, X and Y and another set for W. Is there a reason or did I miss something. Just curious. This is so awesome Thanks for sharing.
I only made them for the most common words. I didn’t want really long words or uncommon words.
These are adorable and will be very useful!
This is going to be a great resource for my small intervention groups to develop sight word recognition as well as blend simple cvc words. Thanks so much XXX
You are very welcome!
Is it intentional that the download is missing a page for the letter a? Wasn’t sure if my download was working properly and wanted to check with you. Thanks for this resource!
Yes, I only stuck with the most common consonant sounds.
I can’t wait to use these Build-a-Word sheets in a literacy center in my classroom. I would like to use this font to make Treasures K sight word sheets. Can you tell me where I might purchase them…. or the name of the font? Thank you so much! Kim
Awesome worksheets. I’m going to use them in my New Entrant (5year olds) class next week!! Thanks 🙂
my custodian attached my cookie sheet to a wooden bookcase – now the kids can build the words onto the upright metal – it is neat and out of the way –
What a cool idea!!
Thank you so much for these! My almost 3 year old son has really taken an interest in wanting to learn words and these will be perfect for him to do while I’m working from home.
You are very welcome!
