Welcome back to week 4 of our Print and Play Game Series! So far, I’ve shared games for beginning sounds, ending sounds, and short CVC vowel words. Today, I’m adding onto that by sharing games for blends and digraphs.
All of the games so far in our series correspond nicely with our Alphabet Sounds App, so if you’d like an app to reinforce these sounds, I’d highly recommend it!
Low-Prep Games for Blends and Digraphs
While these games were a little too easy for NJoy {age 6}, he does have an s-lisp that we’ve been working on a bit. After speaking with a speech therapist, my goal is to sit down with him for 5-7 minutes a day and just practice s sounds with our teeth together. So, the games with s worked perfectly for that!
We started with a level 1 game that featured s. We went through each image, naming each one before playing, practicing our s sound. {Note: page 2 of the download has a picture key.} Then, he tossed the counter on the game board, named the object, and moved the Power Magnet from that side closer to the top. {If you want to see more details on how to play these games, be sure to read the beginning sounds game.}
The games for blends and digraphs in level 1 compare a single consonant sound, such as f, to a blend {or digraph} that contains that same consonant sound, such as fl or fr. This is how the authors of Words Their Way introduce blends and digraphs in their Letter-Name Alphabet Spellers supplement book, which I think is brilliant!
Then, ALuv {age 9} saw the fun we were having and challenged NJoy to a game, so they played a level 2 game with sw and tw. Again, NJoy was able to practice his s sound with the sw blend.
The Level 2 games are more of a challenge because they feature two blends or two digraphs, some of them being very similar in sound; so kids really have to listen for the beginning sounds.
