If you’re a literacy nerd like me, you love terms like preconsonantal nasals, don’t you? For the rest of my “normal readers”, this term is all a part of learning and hearing those sometimes tricky ending blends in words.
Watching NJoy {age 6} spell bump like BUP or hunt like HUT revealed to me that he needed some work on those ending blends. {By the way, looking at how kids invent their own spellings is a FANTASTIC way to find out what phonics skills they need to work on.} So, I created a set of ending blends clip cards for him; and today I’m sharing these clip cards with you!

Developmentally speaking, ending blends can be a bit trickier for kids to hear and spell than beginning blends. The biggest factor is those preconsonantal nasals, which include blends that have n‘s or m‘s in them like -nk, -nt, or -mp. Often times, kids don’t really “hear” the n or m so they leave it out of their spellings.
Over time, as they read the word enough and study the patterns, they will begin to include the n‘s and m‘s; but it is very common for kids to leave them out. {I get this question a lot via email.}
FREE Ending Blends Clip Cards
These free ending blends clip cards {found at the end of this post} are a great way to help kids really zone in on those ending blends. The ending blends you’ll find in these clip cards include: -ft, -lk, -lt, -mp, -nk, -nt, -sk, & -st. There are 28 different clip cards included.
It works best to print them onto cardstock and my kids use our clothespins to clip them, which is a great way to strengthen those fine motor muscles, too! We have more clip cards, too, including our Alphabet Clip Cards, Rhyming Clip Cards, Beginning and Ending Digraph Cards and our Short Vowel Clip Cards.
First, ask the child to say the sounds of the letters on the top of the clip card. Then, name each image below {a picture key is included on the download}, listening for the picture that ends with those two sounds.
I have made these ending blends clip cards challenging for kids, as many of the images end in similar sounds. I did this on purpose because I wanted my son to really listen, not just have an easy answer.
