Learning to listen for and identify rhymes is an important part of learning to read AND spell. Many rhyming words share common chunks that can help kids read and spell new words, like I talk about in our word family post. {Of course, this is not true for all rhyming words, but it is for many of them.}
My daughter, age 4, does very well at recognizing and producing rhyming words, like the activities found in our Rhyme Time Pre-K/K Pack or The Measured Mom’s Rhyming Clip Cards. I wanted to take it a step further. So, I created a set of clip cards that require her to manipulate rhymes in a different way. {Free download at the end of this post.}

Let me just stop and say that I really like clip cards! They are a great alternative to a worksheet or workbook. And since clip cards require kids to use clothespins, they are fantastic for strengthening those fine motor muscles. If your child is ready to try these rhyming cards, but struggles to use the clothespins, use small pom-poms, Power Magnets, or circle counters to place on the correct image. These will still help with those fine motor muscles if you show your child how to pick the manipulatives up by pinching with their pointer finger and thumb.
Listening for Rhymes with Clip Cards
Instead of asking my daughter to find the pictures that rhyme, I created the cards that required her to say all four pictures and find the one that DOESN’T rhyme. First, I modeled it for her a few times. I noticed right away that this was going to challenge her, which is what I wanted!
After doing a few more, she got the hang of it and took off! Woohoo!
Note: Included in the pack is a picture key, just in case you have any questions about any of the images.
