Letter Y Book List

The books in this list include these letter y words: yawn, yo, yes, yak, yellow, yummy, yucky, and yarn.

Yawn by Sally Symes is a cute rhyming toddler book, perfect for a bedtime read. When baby yawns, he passes it on, as yawns are contagious.

Yo! Yes? by Chris Raschka is such a simple book, but one that I LOVE for teaching kids to read with fluency and expression when they’re older. Younger kids can enjoy the simple story, mostly told through pictures of a blossoming friendship between two boys.

Does a Yak Get a Haircut? by Red Ehrlich is a very simple book to help kids overcome the fear that some kids have over going to get a haircut; but the book is illustrated in such a cute way that kids will enjoy it. It’s also a great predictable text for early readers. If your kids like this one, they may also want to check out Does an Elephant Take a Bath?

My Little Yellow Taxi by Stephen Johnson is a companion to his My Little Red Toolbox {which we’ve never read}. This book is highly interactive with lots of car vocabulary and a fun count down of the time with a clock on each page. I will say if you have a very young and curious tot, this book may need to be used with adult supervision only as it can be pulled apart.

Little Blue and Little Yellow by Leo Lionni is not a book we’ve read over and over again. We’ve mainly read it, along with Mix it Up, for teaching how secondary colors are created.

Ring! Yo? by Chris Raschka is probably more of a favorite of mine that Yo! Yes? and I’m disappointed that it’s harder to find. Although it may look like a simple book, it’s rather complex and requires kids to do some thinking as they infer what’s happening in the phone conversation. Such a FUN book for older preschoolers and elementary-aged kids and an especially fun one to get kids writing the other half of the conversation and sharing it with others.

Yummy YUCKY by Leslie Patricelli is definitely a book for tots and young preschoolers, but I will warn you that this book of opposites uses the words “boogers” and “earwax” to explain what’s yucky. While some kids may think this is funny, you know your child best. Patricelli also has Quiet Loud and Big Little that are opposite books, if you’d rather teach the concept that way.

Extra Yarn by Mac Barnett has such a great story line. I would recommend it for older preschoolers and up, unless you have a tot who will sit through longer stories. The story is about a little girl named Annabelle who finds a “magic” box of yarn that never seems to run out. The box is taken from her and the reader is lead to believe that the yarn has run out, but has it? I love how the story is left open so kids can make their own inferences, too.
