Punctuation Clip Cards

When learners are editing or revising their own writing, it’s often hard for them to do it objectively because they are so tied to their own writing. Giving them some time between drafting and revising/editing can help give them “new eyes” for their work.

Another tip is to have them edit or revise sentences or writing that isn’t their own. And that’s exactly what these punctuation clip cards can help kids do!

What’s Included in the FREE Pack?

  • Periods in Sentences
  • Periods in Abbreviations
  • Exclamation Marks in Sentences
  • Question Marks in Sentences
  • Commas in Dates
  • Commas in a Letter {greetings and closings}
  • Commas in Lists
  • Commas in Quotes
  • Quotation Marks in Quotes
  • Apostrophes in Contractions
  • Singular & Plural Possessive Apostrophes
  • Recording Pages to re-write the sentence or phrase the correct way. {see below}

Learners read the sentence or phrase and decide if the punctuation is correct or incorrect. Your learners won’t know exactly which one to look for, but you could color code the blackline clip cards by punctuation type by printing them onto different colored cardstock.

Learners can use the “Fix It” recording page to write the sentence or phrase with the correct punctuation. This makes a great accountability piece if you’re using this as an independent activity.

Another idea is to laminate the cards and use a dry erase marker to circle “correct” or “incorrect.”

Instead of using the “Fix It” recording page, learners could just fix it on the card itself.
