Vowel Team Word Sorts – Cut & Sort

By thisreadingmama Leave a Comment

If you’re looking for some Vowel Team Word Sorts, you’re in the right place! My first grader and I have been working through vowel pairs since Christmas. I created these simple sorts for her to review the vowel teams we’ve worked on.

Did you know we have even more Vowel Team Printables? Yep, we do!

Vowel Team Word Sorts – Cut & Sort

It’s no secret that I love the word study approach and have for 15+ years. I even have four word study apps! Word sorts are such a hands-on way to get kids to really focus in on the patterns they find in words.

The six sorts in this freebie include long vowel teams like ai and oo, vowel diphthongs like oi and ou, as well as a review of the long vowel patterns with sneaky e.

These sorts are great for reviewing the long vowel and vowel team patterns your learners already know. This means that before learners are ready for these vowel team word sorts, they need to know the different patterns. I have lots of vowel team freebies if your learners need to work on these.

To use these sorts:

1. Learners cut out the words and sort them based on what the vowel sounds like on the sorting mat.

2. After learners have sorted each word, ask, “What pattern makes the long a {or whichever sound it is} sound?” Learners should be able to tell you the letters in the word that make the vowel sound.

3. Learners can even use a marker to highlight / color code the patterns.

4. The sorting mat can be used over and over again. Learners can glue the words down to the page when they’re finished sorting them, but I highly recommend they do activities with the words for several days before gluing them down.
