Learn to Read UG Word Family Reader & Activities

By thisreadingmama Leave a Comment

I’m so excited to share that Unit 4 of Learn to Read is HERE! Unit 4 features these three short u word families: the UG word family, UB word family, and UT word family. Plus, there’s an extra lesson that reviews short u words and all the sight words learned in Unit 4.

If you’re new to Learn to Read, be sure to read more about it. If you’re looking for Unit 1-3, you can find them in my shop or at my Teachers Pay Teachers store. Just search for “Learn to Read”.

Today, I’m sharing freebies from Lesson 13, the UG word family. Be sure to check out all the freebies I’ve shared so far from Learn to Read.

Learn to Read UG Word Family Reader & Activities

I like to share freebies, so here are a few from Lesson 13, the UG word family. Unit 4 has all these freebies included AND more, plus everything that’s in color is offered in black/white, too!

UG Word Family Reader - free from Lesson 13 of Learn to Read

UG word family reader {in color} – print front to back {short ways} and staple with a long-arm stapler. One of the first pages shows the words that are included in the book. All review sight words come either from Unit 1, Unit 2, or Unit 3 of Learn to Read or from Reading the Alphabet, which comes before Learn to Read.

You can find more free word family books that I’ve shared from Learn to Read HERE.

More UG Word Family & Sight Word Activities

There are over 60 pages of activities just for the UG word family and the new sight words, but and was, in Unit 4 of Learn to Read. Here are just a few shots of how I used them with my Kindergartner.

In the bundled unit, all printables come in black and white also. My daughter loves to color, so she always requests the black & white reader so she can color it in.

Bug or War - UG Word Family Poem by Becky Spence

UG Word Family poem – included with each lesson is a one-page poem that features the word family and new sight words. We use this mainly for comprehension fun {as I try to make the poems funny or silly in some way}. She also underlines her new words and helps me read the poem on day 2.

UG word family slider from Learn to Read

There are lots of options within the pack. You may or may not use every one of them and that’s okay. Word families and sight words are presented in different ways to appeal to different learners. Our word family sliders are unique in that they require the learner slide both the onset {beginning sound} and the picture to match.

UG word family word sort with oddball

Another UG family activity is the word sort. I love that this simple sort has an oddball included. This requires that learners read through each word {not just guess the word based on the first letter} to find the one that doesn’t fit.

Sight word chants with new sight words

Often, we do our sight word chants {I have FREE animal chants and more sight word chants} with sight words but and was. This particular week, I had just finished our sight word chants for people and we tried them out together.

sight word activity mat for was - from Learn to Read lesson 13

She also loves the sight word activity mats. You can slip them into a plastic sleeve protector for playdough mats or leave them out. Learners can color, stamp, & write the sight words.

sight word search with dot paint

The sight word searches can be done with pencil, but why not change it up and use some dot paint instead? After finding the word multiple times, the learner write the number of times (s)he found it in the “secret” file at the top of the page.
