When it time for kids to do some story writing, often it’s difficult for them to start because either they don’t know exactly how to organize their story or they don’t know what to write about. This FREE Story Writing Pack helps with both problems!

Story Writing Ideas for Kids
It’s writing time, which is often met by groans of, “I don’t know what to write about!” Much like the journal writing ideas from The Measured Mom, in our Writing Lesson for Young Kids series, these free story writing resources give support to young writers.
That’s where the Story Writing Ideas chart/poster comes in. Designed to help kids explore how a problem-solution story is organized, this simple chart contains ideas for setting, characters, and the problem. {You’ll also find wall-sized posters in the download for these three story elements.}
Note: I didn’t include solution, mainly because when kids have brainstormed their setting, character(s), and problem, the solution flows from there.
Also included in the pack is a simple organizer to help kids take the ideas from the chart and apply them to their own writing. I love that young learners can draw in the spaces, while older kids might be encouraged to write in each area. {This organizer may look familiar, as it is similar to the reading comprehension one from my fiction text structure pack.}
Notice, the organizer does not ask kids to decide on a title for their story until the END of the process. For me personally as a writer, often the title comes after the writing is complete. I think asking kids to pick a title first can often box them in and make it more difficult to write.

These are great. I’m hoping that you are going to make one for solution too. I think they we’ll be helpful for having kids identify the story elements in read alouds.
I just came across this site today and truly love this writing idea/resource. Thank you so much for providing it for free! I will be printing and laminating it this week and will start using it with my students. I teach students in special education and am always looking for new ways to help them understand concepts and learn skills. This is kid friendly and easy to understand. Thank you!!!
I’m so glad you can use it! 🙂
